First started riding bikes in 1954. Joined the Kingston and District Motorcycle Club that year and am currently their President. It was through the Kingston Club that Norma and I got hooked with the racing bug. At that time Bemsee’s offices were in Kingston and the Kingston Club provided Marshals for Bemsee events at Silverstone. As the Club expanded and ran events on other circuits we stayed with them, enjoying the special camaraderie that exists within the racing community.
My success has always been in long distance endurance events. Starting with Greeves later Yamahas and then BMW’s. After a serious road accident, off road riding was no longer possible so Europe wide Touring with wife Norma on the back is our forte.
Involvement on the organisational side of racing resulted in me understudying Phil Spahr Clerk of the Course in the early 1970’s succeeding him on retirement. I became a Director of Bemsee in 1978 and Clerk at the first ever combined Car/Bike meeting at Brands on 29/30 Sept 1984 After many years as C of C for Bemsee I obtained my International FIM Steward’s and C of C licences. This proved useful when we ran our first Croix meeting in Northern France.
Having worked for the Insurer covering Motorsport for most of my working life, I became involved with the ACU, becoming a Director in 1997 when I undertook a complete review of the cover provided for Clubs, Officials and Participants in our sport. I sit on a number of Committees involved with the development of our sport and recognise that the current economic situation will present new challenges.
Family wise, Norma still attends all meetings with me. Our Son Stephen rides in Enduros on his BMW and Grandson Charlie is starting riding in Trials on his Beta. When not supporting Bemsee or the family, we still get involved with the Kingston Club, running their annual Trial in January or attending their social events often held in the Surrey/Sussex countryside.
